Basic vocational education and training with apprenticeship contract
Adults can complete two, three or four years of basic vocational education and training (Federal VET Certificate or Federal VET Diploma with/without Federal Vocational Baccalaureate). To do this, they must find a host company and conclude an apprenticeship contract. They attend regular classes at vocational schools and must complete the qualification process.
The vocational education and training offices are responsible for approving apprenticeship contracts.
Shortened basic vocational education and training
In agreement with the contracting parties, the cantonal authority may shorten basic vocational education and training in individual cases. The prerequisite for this reduction is that the apprentice already has prior professional knowledge or has completed basic vocational education and training in another occupation.
According to Art. 18 of the BBV , the vocational school has the right to apply for a shortening of vocational education and training. The reduction is usually one to two years.
An apprenticeship contract must also be concluded in the case of a shortened basic vocational education and training programme.
The shortened basic vocational education and training is completed through the conventional qualification process.
Extended basic vocational education and training
Basic vocational education and training can be extended appropriately for people with special needs. This gives apprentices more time to learn the professional competencies defined in the vocational education and training ordinance. The parties to the apprenticeship contract shall apply to the competent cantonal authority for an extension of the duration of the VET programme together with the approval of the apprenticeship contract. The canton approves the application after consultation with the vocational school. Basic vocational education and training can be provided for full-time or part-time employees. If the company-based training programme is planned alongside part-time employment over a longer period of vocational education and training, the duration of the apprenticeship will need to be extended. The organisation of education requires close cooperation between the three learning locations.
In some professions, special training courses are offered for adults.
Examples:
- The specialised construction trades known as the Polybau industry offers various shortened versions. For example, the one-year additional training for a specialised construction tradesperson (polybuilder) to achieve the Swiss Federal VET Diploma; a metalworking specialist to achieve the Swiss Federal VET Diploma.
- For those changing careers (professionals and baccalaureate students), the IT industry offers a shortened basic training course as an IT specialist (Swiss Federal VET Diploma).
- The “Way-up Apprenticeship” is a special form of shortened apprenticeship. It is aimed exclusively at baccalaureate students. The Way-up Apprenticeship takes two years instead of four and is currently available for the following professions:
