Planning an apprenticeship
The company and individual vocational training plan
The aim of the planning is for the apprentice to ultimately achieve the defined objectives and requirements of professional practice in basic vocational education and training. Basic vocational education and training is usually completed through a qualification process. The apprentice must demonstrate that they can apply the acquired competencies in practice.
- Training is completed efficiently
- Planning aids can be used to make decisions
- Time is saved during implementation
- Costs are saved
- Targeted success monitoring is made possible
- The motivation of everyone involved is increased
- Apprentices and training companies gain greater security
The vocational education and training ordinance and the vocational training plan
The vocational education and training ordinance and the corresponding vocational training plan form the basis for planning and implementing basic vocational education and training. Numerous professional organisations also offer industry- and job-related documentation.
The vocational education and training ordinance defines the exact job title and the duration of vocational education and training. It also contains guidelines for host companies, in particular, the stipulated requirements and the maximum number of apprentices who may be trained in one company at the same time.
The vocational education and training ordinance refers to the vocational training plan. The vocational training plan is the foundational pedagogical framework for basic vocational education and training. It contains the professional competencies to be acquired by the apprentices up to the completion of the qualification. It also supports those responsible for vocational training in host companies, vocational schools and inter-company courses in the planning and implementation of training.
The content and duration of vocational education and training are defined in a vocational training plan for most professions. As is the case for the education and training ordinance, this can be obtained from the relevant professional organisations or from SERI under professional directory .
The company training plan
In the company training plan, the objectives and requirements according to the vocational training plan are distributed over the individual apprenticeship years or semesters and tailored to the individual host company (departments, areas of work).
In some professions for which the vocational training plan is not suitable as a planning tool, the responsible professional organisation draws up a training programme for the host company, which the company can use to draw up the company training plan.
To ensure complete learning success for the apprentices, it is essential to coordinate the company’s training plan with the lessons in the inter-company courses and at the vocational school. This coordination should take place both in terms of time and content so that the theoretical knowledge can be put directly into practice.
The individual vocational training plan
The company training plan is adapted to meet the needs of each apprentice in the individual vocational training plan. It contains specific criteria for planning and reviewing the specified objectives and requirements. When do lessons take place at the vocational school and when do inter-company courses take place? How much time is actually available in the company? When is the apprentice’s educational status checked (vocational education and training report, learning documentation, job-specific tools)? In addition, individual timings for apprentices such as the probationary period, free and supplementary courses, holidays, preparation for the qualification procedure, etc.
