Work on Sundays

Generally speaking, learners are prohibited from working on Sundays. However, the cantonal authority may, in justified cases, authorise apprentices over the age of 16 to work on Sundays. If the work on Sundays is carried out on a regular basis, this must be approved by SECO. The authorisation is granted if:

• the work on Sundays is indispensable for the training, or
• the learners' collaboration is required to remedy disturbances to operations caused by force majeure.

The authorisation to work on Sundays is subject to time off in lieu of one working day being granted to the learner during the previous or following week.

A corresponding EAER Ordinance establishes the list of occupations for which no authorisation is required.
