Universities of applied sciences (UAS)
Part of the Swiss higher education sector (ISCED 5A), universities of applied sciences (UAS) offer a wide range of degree programmes that combine theory and practice. UAS prepare students to work in specific professional fields that require the ability to apply scientific knowledge and methods and, depending on the fields, artistic and creative skills.
To be accepted to a UAS, prospective students must be holders of both the Federal VET Diploma and the Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (FVB). Holders of a Baccalaureate or Specialised Baccalaureate that correspond to the studies chosen may also be admitted without having to take an entrance examination if they are able to show that they have one year of work experience in a field relating to the studies chosen.
Degree programmes at UAS are divided into two levels of study: the first leads to a Bachelor’s degree and the second to a Master’s degree. Bachelor's degree programmes provide a broad general education and fundamental knowledge in the chosen profession. They prepare students to obtain a professional qualification. Master's degree programmes provide additional and specialised knowledge in the chosen profession. They prepare students to obtain a qualification that recognises their advanced competences.
