Recognition and validation of prior learning

Prior learning is adequately taken into account in formal VET programmes or in qualification procedures. Broadly speaking, prior learning includes formal and non-formal learning of a technical or general nature as well as informal learning gained from work experience both related or unrelated to a given occupation.

Prior learning can give rise to the following:

  • Recognition of prior learning to satisfy the prerequisites for admission to a formal education and training programme for someone who lacks a formal qualification
  • Recognition of prior learning, enabling a person to gain advance placement in a formal education and training programme
  • Validation of prior learning, to satisfy the prerequisites for admission to a qualification procedure for someone who lacks a formal qualification
  • Validation of prior learning, enabling a person to gain credit for or exemption from portions of a qualification procedure
