Public holidays

In accordance with the Employment Act (EmpA, SR 822.11), public holidays can be considered as being Sundays. Generally speaking, workers and learners are not authorised to work on public holidays that are considered to be Sundays. Exceptions are governed by law (e.g. in the hotel and catering sectors).

In addition to 1 August, which is a Federal statutory holiday, cantons are able to set a maximum of eight public holidays per year. Where required (if for example the population belongs to different religions), the cantons are able to set different public holidays depending on the regions within their canton.
