Depression and suicide

The psychological disorders that young people most often suffer from vary from slightly depressed moods to major depressive disorders. Between six and eleven per cent of young people aged between 16 and 20 suffer from depressed moods. Young women are more often affected than young men. In Switzerland, suicides are the second leading cause of death among young people (after accidents).

VET trainers can only provide limited assistance to learners by making them aware of potential risks and by providing support. On the other hand, it is up to a doctor (psychologist or psychiatrist) to make a diagnosis and provide therapy. If there are signs of a mental illness, a counselling or specialist centre should be contacted as promptly as possible. The cantonal VET offices are the first point of contact for initial information. They can provide advice and provide contact details of specialised centres.
